If your home’s main water and gas pipes are metal, earth bonding is a crucial safety measure. It involves connecting these pipes with a 10mm single-core cable to your electrical consumer unit or metre earth terminal.
Earth bonding minimises the risk of electric shock. If a live wire comes into contact with a metal pipe, the fault current travels safely through the bonding cable to earth, tripping the circuit breaker and isolating the faulty circuit.
