What Happens During an Emergency lighting test

  • Each emergency light is inspected for damage.
  • All emergency lights are disconnected from their power source for three hours to ensure they can remain illuminated for the required duration.
  • Evaluated areas are checked for sufficient emergency lighting and signage.

Before the Electrical Engineer Arrives

  • Ensure access to areas with emergency lights.
  • Have the electrical certificate for the consumer unit feeding the emergency lights ready.
  • If there’s no valid electrical certificate for the consumer unit feeding the emergency lighting system, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) must be conducted prior to emergency lighting testing.

During Testing

During testing, normal lights will be switched off to assess the emergency lighting.

After Testing

Upon completion of all checks and tests, you’ll receive a detailed report. This report will outline areas that passed or failed, along with recommendations for necessary improvements. Once testing is successful, an emergency light certificate will be issued, confirming compliance with safety standards.

Validity Period of the Certificate

Typically, it’s recommended to renew your Emergency Lighting Certificate annually, though this may vary based on local regulations and premises specifics. Additionally, monthly testing of emergency lighting by the responsible person or company maintaining the property is required.

Certificate Processing Time

Your certificate will be available within three working days, unless a shorter timeframe is agreed upon under special circumstances.
